I felt awkward walking alongside Takune on our way to kill monsters. He was stiff, and refused to look at me, no matter what I did. The way he carried his knife was firm as well.
When we left our street, he and I looked at each other in unison, but when we did, he whipped his head forward. God, why is he so weird all of a sudden? I thought restlessly.
“Takune,” I muttered, “are you alright? You seem pretty…taut.”
He didn’t blink, or even turn his head. “What do you mean? I’m always like this. Maybe it’s just because of the monster.” He suddenly stopped and looked down.
I kept walking a couple of steps before impeding, and looked behind at him.
He clenched his knife tighter. “Maybe it’s because you could die.”
I blinked. “What? I won’t die, Takune.”
“Even if I’m with you, you could still get hit. You can’t do anything right, and I’m afraid you’ll attack it without thinking.”
I tilted my head like a confused kitten. “Takune,” I murmured, “are you worrying about me?”
He snorted but looked into my eyes as he lifted his head slowly. “We should get going. If we don’t that creature might kill someone, or just leave the city, and we can’t have that.”
I followed his large stride as we walked deeper into downtown. This place was always crawling with the darkest monsters at night. I quickly spotted a large creature sulking back into the dark shadows of an abandoned building. I poked Takune.
“Hey, I think I saw our target. What’s the plan?”
He crossed his arms and faced me. “There isn’t exactly a plan. The point is to take him out. He’s a very strong opponent, Rinko, if we complicate things to much, he might strike us too easily.”
He signaled forward, and I followed what I was supposed to do. He went into the front door cautiously. I, however, went through the back, where a window was busted. I climbed through watching for movement in front of me. I spotted Takune examining something and bounded over to him.
“You find anything?” I whispered.
“No, but this is a small building, and it’s broken down, so I think we can find it without difficulty.”
I nodded. When I spun around, Takune grabbed my shoulder and I followed his gaze. He found the monster. It was an ugly creature, covered in fur and scales, and it’s mouth was filled with layers of yellowed teeth. It’s body was out of proportion, with it’s head bigger then anything else, and it’s wings the size of a bat’s. I wrinkled my nose.
Takune nodded behind him. I smiled quickly before darting clumsily behind it before it could notice anything. It grumbled loudly, which echoed throughout the whole shattered building. I tensed my muscles and leaped on the creature, engraving a large wound in it’s back. It roared and Takune came in stabbing at it’s stomach. It screeched at Takune and batted at him. Takune wasn’t fast enough, and he flew back. When he fell, I heard how painful it must’ve been. I winced.
“Takune!”
I sliced the monster arm, making it pour blood out. I got splattered by the red liquid, but I didn’t worry about it. The gash had made it roar louder then I thought was possible. I screamed as I stabbed and hacked at the monster’s stomach as soon as I could get close. Then, Takune had gotten up. He struggled over to help.
It didn’t take long for the monster to fall over. When it was dead I ran over to Takune.
“How are you?” I pressed.
He shrugged off my hand from his shoulder. “I’m fine.”
I smiled. “Look who got hurt?”
He glared at me, but I could see softness in his eyes.
When we got home, I laid him on the bed, wrapping up his leg, which had gotten twisted. I sat next to him. When I finished I looked at him. “You sure you’re alright?”
“Rinko, I’m immortal, it will just fade away and heal on its own. Don’t you know you’re overreacting?”
I blinked. “So then why do you have baind-aids and wrapping stuff?!”
He smiled. “I have no clue.”
I leaned down to kiss him, then I stopped. “Takune, what are we?”
He shrugged. “Immortal freaks, why?”
“No, I mean us. Are we together, or are we just being stupid?”
He looked at me. “Wait, you thought we were together? I’m not into having a relationship, not with you especially. Don’t you remember I said I hated you?”
I frowned angrily. “Yeah, I also remember you saying you loved me before you killed me, or did you forget? Or did you lie?”
He twitched under my gaze, which was weird for him.
He shrugged. “I felt something, but I don’t know what to do about us.”
I glared at him, not even moving a muscle. “I love you, Takune, and if you love me, then what are we doing? Why aren’t we together? Is there something wrong with immortals being in love?”
He looked down. “Only with humans, I guess. I wouldn’t know with immortals, cause it never happened, with me at least.”
“Then why not now?”
“I don’t know, Rinko. I won’t exactly be the best person.”
“Still, I loved you all this time, no matter how much of a jerk you were. That shows something!”
He stood up and kissed my forehead. “Why do you love me? Think about that first.”
I stuttered. “Because you’re amazing!”
“No I’m not. I do the same thing every other immortal does. I’m not special.”
Before he could speak another word, I stood up and wrapped my arms around him, pressing my lips against his. How else would he shut up?
I smiled. “Don’t ever say that.”
He blushed, blinking very slowly. “Rink-ko?”
Afterlife after that was pretty weird. I never brought “us” up again, and Takune didn’t either. I guess he really didn’t love me. He lied to me. I guess I came here for nothing. If I didn’t I suppose I would just be in heaven, not worrying about blood, and thinking about pureness that would put anything else to shame. But that wasn’t me. I thought a bunch of times about killing Takune, but him being immortal meant that was impossible.
“Yo, Rinko!”
I jumped in surprise. Haine had come up behind her. I turned and faced him. “What?”
“I noticed yours and Takune’s behavior. It’s hilarious, but I think you too should go on a date. I agree with you that you two belong together. A nice relaxing date will calm things down!”
I gave him a playfully punch on the arm and laughed. Like hell it will! Tension’s been worse since that day! He won’t even go!”
Haine smiled. “I can arrange that.”
And that’s the story of how Takune and I got stranded alone in town. I decided just to throw something on, but I couldn’t tell if Takune had the same intension, he looked really awesome. I blushed, looking up at Takune. He smiled and put his arm around me playfully.
“What are you getting at?”
He laughed. Why is he acting so human all the time now? “This is a date, isn’t it?” I didn’t even think he would want to go, let alone, come.
Damn you, Haine.
