This would be the most awkward date ever.
I sighed. “Do you at least have plans?”
“Why would I have plans?”
I glared at him from the corner of my eye. “Well that proves you've never been on a date.”
“Oh, c’mon, give me a chance. Let’s just hang around here for a bit.”
I looked around. Not many people filled the streets, and I could say the same about cars or transportation.
I smiled at Takune, trying to make this day pleasant. “Let’s go to some random stores!”
He laughed. “And buy what?”
I shrugged. “I never said we’d buy anything! It’s a start, you know!”
“Alright.”
I followed him to the door, until he suddenly stopped and opened up the door. I blinked awkwardly, and he nodded. When I walked in, he came in behind me, rushing forward before I could even blink. We spent a while in there, and I won’t bore you with the details. Nothing happened.
As we were leaving, I saw a shop selling ice cream. I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember the last time I had ice cream. I turned to Takune and tugged on his sleeve as we were walking out.
“You want to go get ice cream?”
He smiled and nodded.
I don’t know if it was the ice cream or what, but I really felt close to Takune the rest of the day. All we really did was walk around town. We laughed and smiled, and for both of us, I am sure we both felt human. That right now, is the best feeling to me.
It was getting late. We were walking home when I suddenly had a huge pain in my stomach. I’ve been shot?!
I felt like blacking out. The world turned fuzzy as my heart started pounding in my ears. I gripped my stomach and fell to the hard concrete, feeling the familiar hot stickiness of blood.
I reached out in front of me, where Takune turned, his eyes dark with fear.
“T-Takune...”
I saw his mouthing moving, as if he was screaming, and he lunged to me. I blinked softly feeling tears forming.
“Are you OK?!”
I heard Takune’s recognizable voice, a very faint ringing of it, and struggled to nod. “Will… I d-die?” I whispered.
For the first time ever, Takune was crying. I could see the exterior of the small droplets. Yet, he shook his head, knowing since I’m immortal, I’ll be alright.
He started whipping his head around, and I closed my eyes. I didn’t see anything after that. The world was dark. I knew I would remember that night, though. Takune had cried because he was worrying about me, even if I wouldn’t die for a fact.
When I opened my eyes, I was home. I was on the couch; it was the same couch I had Takune lie on. I quickly looked down at my stomach. It seemed to have stopped, because I couldn’t tell. The bullet hole was so deep; I think it went all the way through my body. Right below the heart.
I heard Haine come in, before I saw him. He had taken off his coat and was sitting next to me.
“Is some of your flesh regenerated?” I never thought I’d hear that.
I looked through my stomach. “Some of it is. I still see through though.” I looked up at him. “Where’s Takune? And who tried to kill me?”
Haine sighed. “Turns out it was a monster. He had recently become insane, and that’s the time they’re looking out for blood the most. Somehow he had gotten his hands on some gun, but I don’t know what kind in particular. I do know he blew some human heads off. It really sucks.”
I glanced down heartbreakingly. That’s so awful.
“Oh, and Takune? He’s fine! He’s just been in his room waiting for you to wake up. Got a couple wounds too. It’s not easy dodging a guy with a gun! I’ll go get him for you.”
I lay down again. When he came in, I was basically asleep, but I sat up anyway, waiting for him to start speaking.
“Are you alright, Rinko?”
I smiled. “You cried.”
He frowned. “No I didn’t! Your vision was blurry.”
“But you do care, don’t you?”
Takune shrugged. “Well, I do love you.”
I blushed and looked away. “You liar.”
He leaned in and kissed me. “Would I lie?”
“Duh.”
“Then how about you be my girlfriend, and we’ll see how much I lie.”
I gasped, my face more red then I thought was possible for a pale-faced freak.
“And I know tonight was horrible, but at least I didn’t do to bad?”
I smiled and hugged him tightly. “Sure, Takune.”
My wish had come true; Takune was mine. All my anger and hatred were fading and Haine and Takune had become more human then I thought possible. It was happening so fast too, I really felt we all humans. The only difference was our eyes, and the fact of fighting monsters every night.
Haine and Takune forced me to stay home for a couple days. I don’t know why, but they figured it would be best.
“Yo, Rinko, Takune and I have a monster to take care of. You gonna be alright by yourself?”
It was days after I was wounded. I was sitting on the couch, quietly watching TV. Haine and Takune had come from behind me.
I nodded, smiling. “Sure! I started staying home by myself at age 10!”
Haine laughed. “I stayed home younger then that!”
Takune came over and kissed my forehead. “Bye Rinko.”
Haine grabbed his sword and opened the front door. “Alright, you lovebirds, we have to go. C’mon Takune.”
“Bye guys!”
I sighed softly, lying my head down on the couch cushions. It felt normal, as if I was expecting my parents to come home instead of my immortal mentor and immortal boyfriend. The afterlife was so bizarre. Unexpectedly, a loud thumping filled my ears. I sat up for a second, listening more closely. Nothing else happened. As I got up, I had a scary feeling in my chest. My heart was pounding loudly. I walked through the hallway, gradually making my way through the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Why was I getting so paranoid? Nothing was there, and I’m immortal! I’d be fine.
But no matter what I told myself, I didn’t feel fine. I started hearing footsteps, and I hid quickly inside my closet.
I swear if it’s those two coming back home early, I’m going to scream.
I looked through the crack between the doors without moving a muscle. I didn’t see anyone, or anything. I was about to sigh in relief until an eye glared darkly through the doors. The fact that it was unfamiliar made me want to scream, but I acted like I wasn’t there.
“I found you.”
This is actually when I screamed because he opened the closet and grabbed me by the neck. I didn’t know him in the slightest, which scared me more. How did I make enemies with someone I didn’t even know?!
I struggled for air, and he just smiled cruelly.
I gripped his arm tightly, struggling to make him let go of my throat.
“I-I….h-he…” I forced out.
The world went black around me. It started out fuzzy, and a ringing crowded my mind like bees.
“Don’t even try running,” He muttered.
As I drifted off, I struggled to say: “Go to hell.” before collapsing, the intruder dropping my limp body on the floor.
“I intend to.”
I don’t know where I ended up. It made no sense, because I was thinking I was dreaming, but I had blacked out. Everything around me was glowing white, which hurt my eyes at first, but I just got used to it. I stood up, my legs wobbling. I felt so weak.
Takune and Haine made him home about forty-five minutes later. The light was still on, but other then that, it was as if no crime was committed.
“Rinko,” Haine called, “we’re home!”
Takune walked in after Haine, his shirt soaked in monster blood.
Haine smiled back at him. “You could’ve washed that off. People looked at us like we were psycho killers!”
He shrugged. “We are psycho killers, Haine.”
“Rinko!”
“I already called to her, but she would’ve been out by now. I’ll go get her; she probably went to bed and forgot to turn the light off.”
Takune nodded as Haine went into the hallway, only to reappear, running, and his eyes were blood red from rage.
“Rinko’s missing!”
I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do. I feel like I’m in heaven, but no one’s around. No one to tell me it’s alright, or to at least talk to. I felt strangely apprehensive. The light faded gradually, and I opened up my eyes, my body feeling strangely numb. The floor was cold, and the walls were murky, making me feel frightened. I felt a hand stroke my face, and I gasped.
“I know it’s dark, but it won’t matter soon.”
